The middle of the night and very early morning are my favorite times for driving, since the roads are empty. But visibility is reduced, and also my cameras have a hard time picking anything up — my vision has a much longer range in low light than either my GoPro Hero or my dash cam.
Has anyone found anything in “regular” headlamp form that is ideal for this? Something like, normal when using low beams, and plaid Death Star rally rays when you flip on the high beams.

You could do HID highs. Sure HID’s are annoying in the Low beam form (without proper enclosures) but for a high beam it doesn’t really matter how bright you go. Much easier to do that if you have separate bulbs but if it is a single bulb, I believe dual beams with HID high and halogen low should do it.
Or you could take something like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00…
And reverse the wiring between the high and low.
